Shadow Track 2: Cunning

shadow tracking

The story of David and Goliath is well-known.

A symbol of an underdog triumph over a powerful opponent.

No one was willing to face Goliath, a giant warrior, until a young shepherd named David volunteered who was small and had no armor, but was skilled with a slingshot.

Goliath ridiculed and taunted David's apparent weakness.

But David remained undaunted.

As the giant charged toward David, he struck Goliath with a single stone in the forehead causing him to fall face down.

David then drew Goliath's sword and beheaded him.

David's cunning strategy allowed him to overcome his physical disadvantage.

Instead of fighting Goliath on his terms, David chose to use his slingshot, a weapon that Goliath did not expect and was not prepared to defend against.

David's savvy skills allowed him to claim victory and defeat his much stronger opponent.

Showing that even the mightiest of foes can be defeated with cleverness and faith.

So what’s your slingshot when facing your Goliath of a shadow?

Like Goliath, our shadows can seem like they're bigger than we can handle.

Until, like David, we take the risk.

Then we see the truth—the symbolism of stone to forehead.

Stone is a symbol of reality, and groundedness in matter.

A strong commitment to seeing ourselves truly can overcome the defense of the mind.

The result of the victory: soverignty—David assumes the throne, as a symbol of having taken back his power.

Last time, I talked about the first step in shadow tracking being sweetness and the art of being kind to yourself. (read it here)

Today, let's dive into the second step, cunning.

It's about being clever and one step ahead of situations where your shadow is active.

Think of it like being your own personal Sherlock Holmes, but instead of tracking down criminals, you're tracking down the unconscious patterns of your own psyche.

Cunning is not about playing dirty tricks.

It's about developing a deeper understanding of yourself.

Being cunning is using your intelligence to recognize patterns within yourself and avoid being caught off guard by the shadow's unexpected appearance by identifying your triggers and how you respond to certain situations.

Cunning is strategic thinking.

It involves the use of perception, wit, and careful planning.

By developing your cunningness you'll be able to navigate your inner world with more confidence and ease, able to anticipate the shadow's presence and avoid being consumed by it.

Here are some guidelines:

First, its about being aware of the circumstances where your shadow is most likely to appear.

Then, pay close attention to your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations.

Notice:

  • How’s your breath?
  • Does your heart race?
  • Is your face flushed?
  • What are the repetitive thoughts you’re having?
  • Whose voice do you hear inside?
  • Are your palms or armpits sweaty?
  • What other subtle patterns are you aware of?

Start to recognize which of these characteristics take place first, and in what order.

You then learn to use those signals as awareness to develop a plan of action, a way to avoid falling into the same adverse patterns of behavior.

Good News: you only need to be one step ahead of your shadow!

That means, if your shadow takes place 49% of the time, you only need to be 51% aware.

And anyone can take 1% of action that makes all the difference!

Remember, this is a process.

But the more you work at it, the more cunning you'll become, and the more empowered you'll feel.
